Starlink - operation on 24V DC (part 2)

We have been testing one since the end of April 2023 Permanent installation of our Starlink standard antenna in the four-wheel drive mobile home as well as the Operating the antenna without the Starlink router.
Since then we have also gained valuable experience with regard to the electrical and electronic components to be used and have been able to make improvements based on this.

Controlling the Starlink antenna without a Starlink router

The description of the improvements in detail:

DC-DC converter

  • The previously used (see our contribution and the Posted by Noah Clarke) We replaced the cheap DC-DC converter from the Amazon range after it was defective
  • Our choice fell on the Victron Orion Tr 24/28-2.5 (120W).
  • According to the specification, this is not only durable but also short-circuit proof and can be used in a temperature range of up to +from -20°C +55°C.

Modified Starlink Ethernet adapter

  • Since we have previously used the original Starlink cable between the PoE injector and antenna, a modified Starlink Ethernet adapter was required to accommodate the proprietary STX connector (see our contribution and the Posted by Noah Clarke)
  • After improving the fixed installation of the antenna (see our contribution) we now use a weatherproof Ethernet cable (with RJ-45 connectors) instead of the Starlink cable (with STX connectors)
  • For this reason, the RJ-45 connector of the weatherproof Ethernet cable can be plugged directly into the output of the PoE injector and the modified Starlink Ethernet adapter can be omitted without replacement.

PoE injector

  • Using a PoE tester, we found that the previously used Tycon 4-pair PoE injector was also defective.
  • This defect probably also arose when, due to moisture, the STX plug connection on the Starlink antenna (see our contribution) has been damaged.
  • As we couldn't find a better alternative, we therefore again have a working copy of the Tycon POE-INJ-1000-WT in action.
  • Sold at this time Amazon this item as a US import.

With the components that have been improved in this way, we have been operating the Starlink system in the 4×4 camper stably and reliably for a few weeks now.
The original Starlink router is no longer needed.
The 230V AC inverter can also remain switched off, since the system operates on 24V DC on-board voltage.
