Our Bliss MAN was delivered from the factory with Michelin XZL 2 tires measuring 395/85R20 and load index 168 on snap ring rims 10.00-20. While this is an excellent (and good-looking) tire for unpaved roads (especially able to cope with low air pressures), on the one hand it suffers on paved roads (consequences include "sawtooth formation" and low mileage of only 25,000 - 35,000 km in some cases). – with current costs of around EUR 1000 net per tire. We also hear that the Michelin XZL 2 does not perform optimally in winter road conditions, and as a POR tire it also lacks the 3PMSF marking.
Since we currently have a (very) large proportion of paved (and in the future also wintry) routes on our journeys, we have decided to purchase additional tires that
1) have better properties on paved roads (especially mileage)
2) have better properties in winter road conditions (and marked 3PMSF)
3) are available at lower cost.
Since we were not offered any corresponding tires in size 395/85R20, we decided to change the size - MAN issued us a manufacturer's certificate for 385/65R22.5 on rim 11.75 x 22.5. There is a wide range of more robust construction site tires with 3PMSF marking in this size. These usually have load indices of 160 or 164, but not 168. The latter means that the Bliss MAN also has to be unloaded in this context, which is not a problem in our application anyway.
Specifically, we chose the Apollo Endutrax MA HD 385/65R22.5 164K, for approx. EUR 450 net/piece, mounted on sblack steel rims 11.75 x 22.5 from BAT-Trade (External valve, 10 holes, MZ, LK 335, ET120, tubeless, wheel load capacity 5000 kg at 100 km/h, weight: 43.5 kg, 1 piece). We had the new wheel set installed by the friendly Motordom Truck Service in Troisdorf Spich. Motordom also stores the unused wheel set as a service.
The maximum axle loads are reduced for the new tires with a load index of 160 (or better) as described in the figure below. However, since the vehicle's ready-to-travel weight is currently only 11,080 kg, we (until further notice) had the appraiser enter a gross vehicle weight of 11,990 kg. With the lower axle load values and the lower GVW, both wheel/tire dimensions can remain entered. The adjustment of the speedometer when replacing the wheel sets was entered as mandatory.
